Language Assessment and Transfer Credit

Language Assessment

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures is able to assist students with language assessment for the purposes of determining appropriate course placement and/or meeting General Education World Language Requirements.

Our department can only provide language assessment support for the three languages we teach: Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

To request language assessment for Chinese or Japanese, please contact the following language program coordinators:

Chinese - Steven Knicely
Japanese - Yuko Kuwai

For Korean language assessment, please follow the directions detailed here

Students who are heritage or native speakers of a language not taught at OSU can also get this language proficiency recognized for GE requirements. Details for this can be found on the Center for Languages Literatures, and Cultures website

Evaluating Transfer Credit

Students who need transfer credit from another institution for a language course reviewed should contact the appropriate language coordinator:

Chinese - Steven Knicely
Japanese - Yuko Kuwai
Korean - Yonsoo Kang-Parker

This foreign language course transfer credit review will require course syllabi and may require a language assessment for determining student's placement within our programs' specific pacing and content for the language curriculum if the student plans to continue their foreign language studies at Ohio State.

Students who who need transfer credit reviewed that covers East Asian cultures and literature content, but that is not language focused, should contact Tommy Beyl, student advisor for DEALL. This review will also require a course syllabus from the credit awarding institution.
